Luke is the only gospel that tells the story of Jesus in a “no man’s land” between Samaria and Judea. There, Jesus encounters ten men who have leprosy – a devastating contagious skin condition that was, in those days, impossible to cure and forced lepers to live in isolated areas in groups apart from their family and friends. Jesus sends the ten men to the Temple and on the journey there they are healed. Nine, having experienced healing, make the appropriate sacrifices at the temple and are not seen again. One man, a hated Samaritan shunned by his fellow Jews not only for his leprosy but also for his race, returns to thank Jesus. Why?
