On Monday, April 24, 2023, our own George Garrett travelled to Victoria with his daughters, Lorrie and Linda, and a personal friend for a special honour at the BC Legislature. On arrival, George was hosted by Speaker, Honourable Raj Chouhan, in the Speaker’s Private Room for lunch in the Legislative Dining Room.

After lunch, the group was escorted to the House where they were seated in the VIP area of the Gallery as the Members of the Legislative Assembly gathered below. MLA Mike de Jong, of the BC United Party (formerly BC Liberal Party), honoured George, noting that his journalism career in British Columbia began 70 years ago “with a microphone and a tape recorder” and he praised George’s fairness in reporting over the years. de Jong also spoke of George’s good works following his retirement with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, mentioning that George himself is currently being treated for cancer.
