If you’ve ever had to say a permanent goodbye to someone you know how hard and emotional that is. Today’s Gospel is small part of what the write of John calls “The Farewell Discourses” . Jesus begins this conversation with his disciples at the Passover Supper before he is crucified. He upends tradition as he always does by washing the feet of his disciples rather than having it done by the lowest servant. Jesus is preparing them for his departure. The question is what does it mean to love one another. Is love for one another a closed circle of those like us or who we love? How do we understand what is happenning in our world as the circle of love is restricted to only those like us and others of no value are tossed aside. Did Jesus really want us to love everyone? Love those we disagree with.
