For the third Sunday after Easter, Rev. Cari preached a sermon in which she held two stories side by side: the Biblical story of the “Road to Emmaus” from Luke 24: 13-35, and the story of a cold-water swimmer named Lynne Cox.
The connection between the two stories is the “more than” quality of presence found in the Risen Christ, and the characters in Lynne’s story. Both are luminous experiences for those who had these encounters… both are transforming, vocation-clarifying. The resurrected one, the Cosmic Christ, is always widening the circle, planting joy and wonder in the midst of fear and dread.
Rev. Cari is grateful to her colleague the Rev. Jennifer Wilson for making her aware of this “extra-Biblical” story, found on the “This is Love” podcast.
