In this sermon on Acts 8:26-39, guest preacher the Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey offers both the good news of a boundary-breaking Gospel, and an invitation and challenge to Crossroads United Church, to stand firmly in that good news as allies with racialized Black peoples.
He walks the congregation through this story of the encounter between Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, pointing out the the barriers that one would have faced, as well as the work of the Holy Spirit in breaking them all down.
He ends with a ringing affirmation of the grace of God, as well as that Biblical question, hanging in the air: “What is preventing Crossroads United Church from fully engaging in acknowledging, studying, praying and actively wrestling against anti-Black systemic racism?”
It is a question to which we shall return at Crossroads.
