The Stump the Preacher request that instigated this sermon was, as Rev. Cari says in the opening moments of it, that she “please talk explicitly about substitutionary atonement” in such a way that exposes it as ‘old paradigm’ – and then offer a constructive theology of God’s love pouring out.
So part lecture, part sermon, Rev. Cari walks through a variety of theologians from the Patristic age to the Reformation and beyond, in search of a life-giving understanding of how Jesus’ death on the cross is “for us.”
The slides which were displayed during the sermon are posted here, if you would like to follow along with them.
