Joan Beverly Larke

May 7, 1936 – July 25, 2023

With gratitude for her life and with sadness at its loss, we announce the death of Joan Larke on July 25.

Joan was born in Carman, Manitoba, and was the eldest member of the Hester and Phil Smiley family. Joan is survived by her loving husband Howie, son Chris (Mary) granddaughter Audrey, son in law John Friesen, grandson Andrew, granddaughter Megan (David) Gariepy. She was predeceased by her cherished daughter Jennifer in 2022.

Joan was a “career banker”, starting work at CIBC at age 17, and because of her passion with financial matters, was recruited by her lifelong friend, Diane Falk, as a volunteer for the Royal Columbian Hospital Auxiliary. She was their treasurer, ran the successful Lotto Booth and was the proud recipient of her volunteer pin for over 35 years of service.

Joan was meticulous in her work as she was in her daily life. Her home was her sanctuary, hosted many family gatherings and was famous for her spare rib dinners. Delighted morning rituals involved feeding peanuts to her beloved backyard wildlife family including Blue Jays, squirrels and thieving crows!
