May 14, 2023 was not only Mother’s Day and the 6th Sunday after Easter at Crossroads, but also “Mama’s Day” – a Sunday when we focus on the partnership with Mama Orphans Children’s Home in Busia, Kenya.
Rev. Cari preached on John 14:15-21, a part of Jesus’ long discourse in John’s Gospel to the fearful disciples before his death. In today’s text, he assures them that he will “not leave them orphaned” and that he will return to them. Essentially, everyone who loves him and keeps his commands will receive a new partner and presence in the Holy Spirit, who he calls the “Paraclete.”
Of course, Rev. Cari can’t resist unpacking a juicy word in Greek for the congregation, so much of the sermon rests on just who this “Paraclete” is, and what belongs to God, and what belongs to us in partnership.
