It was the fourth Sunday in Lent, year C, this week, so must be time for the every-three-years sermon on the Prodigal Son! Rev. Cari actually looked back in her records and, yup! she’s preached on Luke 15 every single opportunity since 2004.
So she had to encourage the congregation to “hear the text as if for the first time” and she also had to do that herself. And what did she hear?
Forgiveness is a yielding, a relenting, a letting go of “all-or-nothing-thinking.” It’s the threshold to that open space Jesus calls the Reign of God. And healing is a gift that is given once we cross that threshold. When we do, we become more effective at resisting true injustice.
If you long for “justice” to be a measured fairness, or something you can control, this sermon invites you into a new way of seeing.
