Anyone familiar with this time of year – Holy Week knows that it always begins with Palm Sunday.  As tradition dictates, we usually have some form of palm parade.  Not this year, thought.  Reading from Luke’s gospel, there are no palms in the parade.  So, it’s an Un Palm Sunday.  Instead, the disciples and people welcoming Jesus threw their cloaks on the ground.  A cloak was an important part of one’s daily dress, and likely, impoverished people only had one cloak.  It would be the equivalent of us throwing down our Burberry, Barbour, Moncler, Prada, North Face, Canada Goose, and Coach items on the ground.  Why begin with a week with such consequences for Jesus with a parade?  He had the crowds on UN Palm Sunday, but by the end of the week, his “parade” consisted of two thieves on crosses, Roman soldiers, and three women, one of whom was his mother.  What was the point Jesus was making by riding into Jerusalem on a donkey?
