Advent Bible Study “Now is the Time”

  • 07:00 PM
  • (778) 593-1043

Join with others (via Zoom) in a small group covenant to reflect together during this Advent season.

During this Advent, join with Rev. Cari and others who will, for three Wednesday evenings, journey with Janice MacLean of the Prayer Bench, through an exploration of the “liminal time” we are currently in. The word “liminal” comes from a Latin word that refers to a “threshold” — so liminal space is that space between where we have been and where we are headed…between the familiar and the unknown. It’s a good description of the season of Advent, and very apt for our time in the COVID-19 pandemic as well.
The three sessions combine Bible study, watching a video from Laura Hunter (Minister for Justice and Mission in the Atlantic Regions of the United Church) and reflection, group spiritual practice, and discussion. Older youth and adults of all generations are warmly welcome to join in this study. Please indicate your interest in attending by emailing Rev. Cari directly.

[Session 1]

Dwelling in Liminal Space

Wednesday, December 2
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

This session will include introductions and the creation of group norms for the study, listening to an audio file of Janice MacLean sharing reflections on “Liminal Space” and discussion, a group spiritual practice and closing check-out.

[Session 2]

Now is the Time

Wednesday, December 9
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

The second session will jump off from Bible Study of the first 8 verses of Mark’s gospel, in which we meet John the Baptist, and then reflect with the Rev. Linda Yates, who has provided a piece of writing, and discussion, before a closing check-out.

[Session 3]

Signs of the Time

Wednesday, December 16
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

The final session includes a video of Laura Hunter, diaconal Minister of Justice and Mission for the Atlantic Regions of the United Church, as she reflects on the signs of liminality she has particularly seen during the past 9 months of the pandemic. Our discussion will jump off from her reflections, and we will close with a guided meditation for our final group spiritual practice.
